What is a Mission Statement?

Simply put, a mission statement explains why a company exists in a sentence or short paragraph. This statement helps to align internal employees behind a single purpose. It also helps communicate to customers, partners, and shareholders the fundamental goal of the business.

Every company needs a clear definition of why it exists. It is what helps to:

How to Write a Mission Statement

To write a successful mission statement, you first need to start with what it is your company does – free of fluff.

Ask yourself key questions such as: what service does your company provide? What products do you produce?

But the very best statements don’t just effectively communicate what the company does. They also form a connection with customers.

This means you also need to consider your company’s vision statement for the future and your core company values.

Vision and values are not just for your internal stakeholders. They also allow you to create that connection with your customers. Your mission statement should connect your company’s core offering with the “why.”

A super simple formula for writing your mission statement is to incorporate three key aspects:

  • What: What does your company offer?
  • Who: Who do you sell to?
  • Why: Why is what you do important?

Answering these three key questions will help you write a killer mission statement.

What Makes a Great Mission Statement?

What separates a great mission statement from a serviceable one?

Your statement should be bold. If you’re going to inspire external and internal stakeholders, you have to be ambitious.

At the same time, you should stay realistic. There’s no point in broadcasting an impossible mission. It won’t connect with your customers. And there’s no need to force a fake philanthropic angle into your mission. If it feels false, people will know. 

For example, there’s nothing wrong with being on a mission to “help coffee enthusiasts start every day right with the best cup of hot java.”

Trying to cram in a higher cause into your mission statement when it’s not a real priority will come back to bite you in the future.
